Functional Medicine and the ROR: Return on Relationships with Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum
In this episode, Roxanne Derhodge and Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum discuss the importance of functional medicine. They delve into topics like the influence of diet on brain function, the role of health coaches, and the limitations of relying solely on medication for mental health issues. They also examine the growing trend towards integrative medicine.
Key Points
- Sandra Scheinbaum's journey from a clinical psychologist to a functional medicine expert highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of chronic illness, including mental health issues, through diet and lifestyle changes.
- Understanding the gut as the "second brain" that significantly impacts our decision-making and emotional state underscores the need for a holistic approach to health, considering factors such as diet, stress, relationships, and sleep.
- The evolution of functional medicine reflects a growing interest from both consumers and healthcare professionals in more personalized, evidence-based approaches to health and wellness that go beyond traditional Western medicine's focus on symptom management.
Quote: “Often people don’t realize that the gut is your second brain. It’s probably more important in terms of driving as the decision maker.” Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum
Functional medicine is a more patient-centred approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying the cause of the disease and not just treating symptoms with pharmaceuticals. It looks at the patient’s history and gathers information to try to find the underlying cause of the illness. Functional medicine is, thankfully, becoming much more mainstream. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we welcome Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum to share her experience and thoughts on why functional medicine is a better solution for combating chronic disease and lowering healthcare costs.
