A Conscious Conversation About Diversity and Inclusion with Phyllis Reid-Jarvis

E169 • Apr 29, 2021 • 54 mins

In this episode, Roxanne Derhodge converses with Phyllis Reid Jarvis about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. They explore the impact of recent events on organizational diversity, the importance of acknowledging individual diversity, and the role of education in combating systemic racism. They delve into personal experiences with racism, understanding it as a system, and steps to address its root causes. The discussion concludes with advice on self-care and handling racial trauma.

Key Points

  • Phyllis Reed Jarvis emphasizes the importance of individual self-care through practices like meditation, prayer, or hobbies as a foundational step to cope with the trauma from events like the Black Lives Matter movement and to facilitate having courageous conversations about race and diversity.
  • Organizations are increasingly adopting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, but there is still a significant gap between policy and practice, necessitating more authentic and radical leadership to create systemic change.
  • Employees are encouraged to engage in open dialogue about their experiences with race and diversity, recognizing that personal stories and feelings are valid and necessary for creating a more inclusive and understanding workplace environment.

Quote: “What I’m seeing across the board, companies are looking at diversifying their makeup.” Phyllis Reid-Jarvis

The events of the past year have led to some very frank discussions about systemic racism and the effects it has on today’s society. This in turn has created the space for conversations directed around diversity and inclusion at home and in the workplace. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we welcome Phyllis Reid-Jarvis to have a conversation about how leaders can guide their teams through tough conversations and what employees can do to help themselves.
