The Power of Authentic Communication to Resolve Conflict in Teams with Charmaine Hammond
In this episode, Roxanne converses with former correctional officer Charmaine Hammond about trust, conflict resolution, and communication. They discuss the dynamics in virtual work environments, the importance of checking in on team members, and Charmaine's animated film project. They also reflect on the pandemic's impact on mental health, the need for patience post-crisis, and the importance of seeking help.
Key Points
- Charmaine emphasizes the importance of trust and effective communication in leadership, drawing from her experiences as a correctional officer and mediator to illustrate how respect and kindness can disarm people and build trust even in challenging environments.
- Leaders are encouraged to communicate clearly and consistently with their teams, especially during times of change, to reaffirm what is not changing and to create psychological safety by reducing assumptions and gossip.
- The upcoming animated movie "Back Home Again" aims to inspire conversations around community and mental health, highlighting the importance of acknowledging it's okay not to be okay and the need for asking for help during times of crisis.
Quote: “If conflict seems to be happening, you’ll be so well served and so will the people experiencing this if it’s addressed early on.” Charmaine Hammond
Creating an atmosphere of trust and authenticity for your team is never an easy task, but it’s especially difficult now in these unprecedented times. With virtual workspaces and the uncertainty as to what the future of many businesses and workplaces will look like as we move toward “returning to work”, leaders have to work harder than ever to facilitate effective communication and resolve conflict in their teams whether it’s online or in person.
